Apokoronas is one of the most historic and beautiful areas of Crete, a landscape of wild mountains and fertile valleys. Located in Vafes, one of the villages of Apokorona, 32 km from Chania, is IRINI’S House a stone mansion dating from 1850, which has been rebuilt in accordance with architectural tradition in an area with many fine houses. It consists of four three-floored apartments and has beautiful views of a gorge, mountains and hills.
The use throughout of wood, covering floors, ceilings and stairs, and the extensive use of local stone, lends the apartments their special character. Traditional elements include a wine press and a wood-burning oven. In addition there is a swimming pool.
There are several traditional cafes in the village and a tavern offering genuine Cretan cuisine.
