Apokoronas is one of the most historic and beautiful areas of Crete, a landscape of wild mountains and fertile valleys. It was the place where emperors and lords of the Byzantine Empire would reside to enjoy the wealth and beauty of the land. In many places the Cretan architectural tradition which developed from the 16th century onwards, with strong Venetian influences, is in evidence.

Located in Vafes, one of the villages of Apokorona, 32 km from Chania, is IRINI’S House a stone mansion dating from 1850, which has been rebuilt in accordance with architectural tradition in an area with many fine houses. It consists of four three-floored apartments and has beautiful views of a gorge, mountains and hills.

The use throughout of wood, covering floors, ceilings and stairs, and the extensive use of local stone, lends the apartments their special character. Traditional elements include a wine press and a wood-burning oven. In addition there is a swimming pool.

There are several traditional cafes in the village and a tavern offering genuine Cretan cuisine.

IRINI House offers you the chance of a uniquely peaceful holiday in beautiful natural surroundings away from the bustle of tourism, putting you in touch with the real Crete.
